Licorice Root
What's Inside?
Licorice is one of the most recognizable flavors known to man. Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is often found in candy, cuisine, cocktails, and even tobacco products. Traditional licorice is black in color and is technically in the legume family. Licorice Root is grown in Europe and throughout Asia and can be identified by their long, purple-blue flowers.
Licorice Root has been used as an herbal remedy for various health reasons since ancient times. Historically, Egyptian, Chinese and Indian health practitioners used Licorice Root for a wide variety of ailments, from digestive issues to menopausal symptoms.
Today, Licorice Root is touted for its comforting aroma and as a strong source of flavanoids, which can be beneficial in decreasing oxidative damage in your cells that can lead to disease. It is important to note that Licorice Root does contain glycyrrhizic acid, which makes it unsafe for use during pregnancy and for those with hypertension, liver disorders, edema, kidney disease, low blood potassium, heart disease or heart failure.
